They are made up of thin-fiber like material that traps larger to smaller particles. But it cannot remove smell and gases from the air. For which any other filter is used along with it to create an ideal air-purifier. It needs replacement after 2 to 4 years.  

  1. UV Light Filters:

Some air purifiers use UV light to filter air. UV light is a great weapon against bacteria and viruses and can provide good protection against them. It not only damages their cellular structure but also their genetic structure. When DNA of microbes gets damaged due to UV, they kill themselves due to a self-destruction mechanism.

But UV filters are not used alone in an air-purifier.   1. Activated Carbon Filters:

Unlike HEPA filters, carbon filters are known for removing gases and odors from the air. Activated carbon filters are activated carbon atoms that have very tiny holes in them which make them able to trap particles and form bonds with unwanted molecules present in the air. 

It has a large surface area due to which it can eliminate a large number of particles at a time. But it is less efficient as compared to other filters. Different chemicals (such as potassium permanganate) are added in it to boost its effectiveness. 

  1. Electrostatic Filters: 

Electrostatic filters remove particles from the air by electrically attracting them towards an opposite charge. In such filters, the air is passed through stationary fibers that have static charges. When air particles pass through the pores of this filter, charges attract them towards themselves and separate them from the air. Air gets purified and is eliminated from the air-purifier while unwanted particles stay behind on the collector plate. From the collector plate, they can be removed easily. 

What is amazing about this filter is that it does not need replacement after some time. The reason is that it uses electric charges to separate impurities and these impurities do not stick to filter but get separated in a collection plate from where they are removed. To maintain the performance of this filter it is recommended to not let particles gather on the plate and remove them after some time.
